Ford Motor Company is focusing its efforts on developing a $30,000 electric vehicle aimed at directly competing with Tesla Model 3 and Tesla Model Y, according to reports.

CEO Jim Farley described the current EV market as being in the “third inning of a nine-inning game,” stressing that creating an affordable model is now a top priority for the company.

To achieve this, Ford is developing a new flexible platform called UEV, designed to support a wide range of vehicles — from sedans and compact crossovers to vans. A dedicated team, including former Tesla and Formula 1 engineers, is working on the project.

The first vehicle based on this platform is expected to be a $30,000 electric pickup, with a planned release in 2027. If successful, Ford could launch full-scale competitors to Tesla’s most popular models by late 2027 or 2028.

Farley also acknowledged that the current Ford Mustang Mach-E lags behind Tesla in some areas, adding that the new model is intended to close that gap.
