Hyundai is launching its new Ioniq V electric fastback in China, combining a large body, advanced technology and a relatively low starting price. Sales are scheduled to begin on September 29, while pre-orders are already open. The model is offered in three configurations priced from 119,900 to 139,900 yuan, or roughly $17,700 to $20,600.

The Ioniq V is nearly 4.9 meters long and has a 2.9-meter wheelbase, making it considerably larger than a typical city EV. It is built on Hyundai’s E-GMP electric vehicle platform and uses a single rear electric motor producing either 188 hp or 225 hp, depending on the version.

The car is available with 53.5 kWh and 66.8 kWh LFP batteries supplied by CATL. Depending on the configuration, Hyundai lists a CLTC range of 520, 540, 620 or up to 650 kilometers.

The CLTC test cycle generally produces higher range figures than the WLTP system used in Europe. For the Ioniq V, published equivalent WLTP figures range from 421 km to 527 km, depending on the version.

800-volt system and 27-inch display

The Ioniq V features an 800-volt high-voltage architecture and a 27-inch 4K central display powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8295 processor.

The infotainment system integrates Chinese AI models, including Baidu’s Ernie Bot and ByteDance’s Doubao. The car also features a head-up display and a Momenta-developed driver-assistance system offering Level 2+ capabilities.

Designed for China

The Ioniq V was developed under the leadership of Hyundai’s China design center and is specifically tailored to the Chinese market. The model is currently intended for China, although Hyundai has described it as a potential global model that could eventually be exported to other markets. No specific European or U.S. launch plans have been announced.

Hyundai plans to expand its electric-vehicle lineup in China significantly. Starting with the Ioniq V, the company says it plans to introduce around 20 new electric and extended-range models in the Chinese market over the next five years.
