Ukraine will soon bring back Phantom patrol cars to detect traffic violations more effectively, Interior Minister Ihor Vygivskyi said during a government questions session in parliament.
The unmarked patrol vehicles are designed to look like ordinary cars while automatically detecting speeding violations.
Vygivskyi said the Phantom vehicles would return to Ukrainian roads in August 2026. At least three vehicles are expected to begin operating initially, with the fleet gradually expanding.
The cars previously operated for only about a month before Russia’s full-scale invasion. Even during that short period, police issued penalties to more than 26,000 drivers for speeding.
Ukraine currently has 60 automated speed cameras, but Vygivskyi said around 600 additional cameras would be needed to cover all dangerous road sections across the country.
The return of the Phantom patrols comes amid broader efforts to strengthen penalties for repeated traffic violations.
