A new and potentially formidable rival to the Tesla Model Y has emerged as Rivian prepares to launch its most affordable model yet. The upcoming Rivian R2 has already turned heads with live photos and early impressions ahead of its market debut, InsideEVs reports.
Reviewers who have seen a pre‑production prototype say the R2 delivers impressive qualities that make it one of the most anticipated electric SUVs. While its overall design doesn’t break new ground, the compact SUV still looks striking. The R2 essentially takes design cues from the larger Rivian R1S — a model that has garnered praise since its release — but in a more accessible size.
For 2026, the Rivian R2 arrives as a substantial SUV with a 4.7‑meter (15.4‑foot) body. Buyers will reportedly be offered several powertrain options, with the top variant producing up to 656 horsepower. Rivian is targeting a driving range of around 500 km (310 miles), combining robust performance with everyday practicality.
Despite its familiar styling, the R2 is built on an all‑new platform designed to enable more affordable, mass‑market production. Early impressions also highlight the SUV’s strong acceleration and well‑proportioned dimensions, which analysts say align with buyer preferences.
Industry sources expect the R2’s starting price to be around $45,000, positioning it as an attractive alternative to competitors in the compact electric SUV segment.
