US and Chinese officials have concluded a new round of negotiations that could pave the way for a high-stakes meeting between US President Donald Trump and the head of China.
According to Politico, US Trade Representative Jamison Greer said that the coordination of efforts between the two sides is bringing them closer to a productive summit capable of reshaping the tone of economic dialogue between the countries.
The talks took place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, marking the starting point of President Trump’s Asian tour.
“We are on the threshold of one of the most important meetings between our leaders. We expect that now we can achieve the most fruitful results,” Greer told the media following consultations with the Chinese delegation.
Negotiators focused on key issues, including mutual market access, tariff policies, and intellectual property protection.
The Chinese delegation was led by Li Chengang, who highlighted the intensive and substantive nature of the talks, acknowledging that significant progress had been made.
Li also noted that stable trade relations between China and the US support not only the prosperity of their own economies but also have a positive impact on other countries.
