For the first time in recorded history, warships from mainland China have entered Taiwan’s restricted waters, marking a significant escalation in military activity around the self-governing island.
According to Taiwanese authorities, several vessels from the Chinese navy crossed into waters that Taiwan considers restricted, prompting a response from the island’s armed forces and coast guard.
Taipei described the move as a serious provocation and said it closely monitored the ships throughout the incident. Military and surveillance assets were deployed to track the vessels and assess their activities.
The incursion comes amid growing tensions across the Taiwan Strait, where China has increased military pressure through naval patrols, air operations and large-scale exercises. Beijing views Taiwan as part of its territory and has not ruled out the use of force to achieve unification.
Taiwan, meanwhile, maintains that it is a sovereign entity and has repeatedly condemned Chinese military activities near the island.
Officials have not reported any direct confrontation between the two sides, but analysts say the incident underscores the increasingly tense security environment in the region.
