A Russian Shahed drone struck a Chinese commercial vessel in the Black Sea overnight on Monday, May 18, according to Ukrainian Navy spokesperson Dmytro Pletenchuk.

“It is interesting what motivated the Russians to hit a Chinese merchant ship with a Shahed drone in our sea tonight. Fortunately, there were no casualties, but this is something new,” Pletenchuk wrote on Facebook.

The vessel was reportedly located in Ukrainian territorial waters at the time of the attack.

Odesa region was once again subjected to a massive Russian drone assault overnight. According to preliminary information, two people were injured in Odesa, including an 11-year-old boy. Drones struck three residential buildings in two districts of the city, one of which was destroyed.

Russian forces have repeatedly targeted ships operating in Ukrainian territorial waters in the Black Sea. Earlier, during an overnight attack on April 26, a civilian vessel flying the flag of Palau was damaged while loading cargo in the port of Odesa.
