The US Central Command (CENTCOM) said American forces carried out strikes on several targets in southern Iran on Monday, May 25, describing the operation as an act of self-defense. CENTCOM spokesperson Tim Hawkins stated that the targets included missile launchers and Iranian boats allegedly attempting to deploy naval mines, Sky News reports.
According to Hawkins, the strikes were aimed at protecting US personnel from potential Iranian threats. He added that despite the ongoing ceasefire, the United States is continuing to act with restraint.
The strikes came amid reports from both Washington and Tehran about progress in peace negotiations, although no final agreement has yet been reached. US President Donald Trump said the sides are currently discussing the final details, while an Iranian representative stated that the core provisions have been agreed upon but the deal is not yet finalized.
Earlier, Iran’s Fars news agency reported powerful explosions near the Strait of Hormuz close to the cities of Sirik and Jask.
The US and Iran are continuing negotiations over a possible agreement that could extend the ceasefire for around two months. Under the proposed arrangement, Washington would ease the blockade, while Iran would restore navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
However, major disagreements remain. Iran insists on controlling shipping traffic in the strait, while the US, European countries, and Arab states oppose such a scenario.
