There are dozens of cheese varieties, and while some are considered healthier than others, experts say there is no single "best" option.
According to registered dietitian and founder of Chelsey Amer Nutrition, Chelsey Amer, cottage cheese is among the healthiest choices because it is high in protein, contains filling fats, and is relatively low in sodium. She also recommends mozzarella and ricotta as nutritious options.
No single healthiest cheese
Amer says there is no definitive answer to which cheese is the healthiest. Instead, consumers should choose cheeses that fit both their nutritional needs and personal preferences.
Although eating too much cheese may have negative health effects, many varieties differ mainly in their levels of protein, sodium, and fat. For that reason, she advises focusing not only on nutrition but also on enjoying the food.
Least processed cheeses
Among the least processed cheeses, which are generally considered better choices, the dietitian highlighted:
- goat cheese;
- feta;
- ricotta;
- cottage cheese.
Best choice for sandwiches
For sandwiches, Amer recommends fresh mozzarella, noting that it is rich in protein and calcium while containing less sodium than many other types of cheese.
