U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy are expected to meet in New York on Tuesday on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, according to Ukrainian journalist Alex Rauhoflu of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.
The meeting is scheduled for 1:15 p.m. Washington time, or 8:15 p.m. Kyiv time.
Trump’s special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are also expected to attend, along with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
The talks come as Washington seeks reciprocal steps from Russia and Ukraine to reduce hostilities and revive diplomatic negotiations. Zelenskyy has said that possible de-escalation measures and security issues, including energy security, will be among the topics under discussion.
The meeting follows a phone call between Trump and Zelenskyy on September 20, after which the Ukrainian president said the two sides had agreed to meet in New York and described the diplomatic process as gaining momentum.
Zelenskyy arrived in the United States ahead of the UN General Assembly. Before reaching New York, he also met CIA Director John Ratcliffe during a stopover at Shannon Airport in Ireland. The details of their informal conversation were not disclosed.
The Trump-Zelenskyy meeting is expected to address the war with Russia, possible de-escalation measures and Ukraine’s security needs, including efforts to secure additional U.S.-made Patriot air defense missiles ahead of winter.
