Rare dwarf fox thought extinct rediscovered on Mexican island after more than 20 years

A rare dwarf fox believed to have disappeared from the wild has been rediscovered on Mexico’s Cozumel Island, giving scientists new hope for the survival of one of the region’s most mysterious mammals.

Researchers recently released photographs of the tiny predator after officially documenting the species for the first time in more than two decades. The fox was initially captured, studied, and released back into the wild in 2023, and scientists have now confirmed its continued existence.

The Cozumel fox is found nowhere else on Earth. It belongs to a unique island population that is approximately 20–40% smaller than the mainland gray fox, Gray Fox. Very little is known about the animal’s behavior, population size, or habitat requirements.

According to researchers, the rediscovery confirms that the species has not gone extinct, but it remains critically endangered.

“The biggest challenge facing the Cozumel fox is that we still know very little about it, including how many individuals remain, where they live, and how they survive,” said study lead author Travis Bayer of the conservation organization Pathos Wildlife.

The fox is an example of island dwarfism, an evolutionary process in which animals become smaller over time after adapting to isolated island environments with limited resources. Several other animals on Cozumel, including dwarf raccoons and dwarf coatis, have undergone similar evolutionary changes.

Archaeological evidence suggests that the Cozumel fox has inhabited the island for at least 5,000 years, likely arriving long before the rise of the Maya civilization. Before its recent rediscovery, the last confirmed sighting of the animal in the wild dated back to 2001.

Scientists say the new findings highlight the urgent need for conservation efforts and further research to determine how many foxes remain and how best to protect their habitat.

The discovery follows several other recent wildlife breakthroughs around the world, including the identification of dozens of previously unknown insect and spider species on Angola’s remote Lisima Plateau.
