Argentina captain Lionel Messi has become the highest goalscorer in FIFA World Cup history after scoring in Argentina's Group J match against Austria at the 2026 World Cup.
The 38-year-old forward found the net late in the first half, converting a low cross from the left flank to beat the Austrian goalkeeper and make football history.
The goal was Messi's 17th World Cup goal, allowing him to surpass former Germany striker Miroslav Klose, who scored 16 goals in 24 World Cup matches.
Messi reached the record in his 28th World Cup appearance. The 2026 tournament is the sixth World Cup of his career, extending his own record for appearances at the competition.
Argentina are the defending world champions, having won the previous World Cup, and Messi continues to add to an already remarkable international legacy.
