Apple is developing several new satellite-based features for the iPhone, according to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg.
While current iPhone models already allow text messaging, emergency calls, and roadside assistance via satellite, the company is working on additional capabilities. These include an API for app developers to integrate satellite connectivity into their apps, an Apple Maps version that works without cellular or Wi-Fi coverage, the ability to attach photos to messages, and enhanced “natural use” support, allowing users to connect to satellites even if their phone isn’t directly pointed at the sky.
These features could significantly improve iPhone usability in areas outside traditional cellular coverage. Another potential update, first reported by The Information, may enhance 5G networks by enabling satellite connectivity to extend coverage.
Gurman notes that basic satellite functions will remain free, while customers will pay operators for extended support. Additionally, Apple’s satellite partner, Globalstar, reportedly needs to upgrade its infrastructure to support these enhancements, with Apple providing financial assistance for the improvements.
