OpenAI has launched a standalone translation service called ChatGPT Translate, positioning it as a competitor to Google Translate. The tool supports over 50 languages, though Ukrainian is not yet available for translation into Ukrainian, but texts from Ukrainian can be translated into other languages.

ChatGPT Translate offers a web interface similar to Google Translate, with two text fields for the original and translated text, plus a language selection menu. A key feature is the ability to control translation style: users can choose “natural,” “academic,” “business,” or “child-friendly” modes. Selecting a style automatically opens ChatGPT with a pre-filled prompt for the chosen translation style.

On desktop, input is text-only, while mobile browsers also support voice input. Image translation is planned but not yet functional at launch. Unlike Google Translate, ChatGPT Translate currently cannot translate documents, images, or web pages.

Previously, translation capabilities were available directly within ChatGPT, but they have now been moved into this dedicated service. There is no standalone mobile app for ChatGPT Translate at this time.

While Google Translate supports over 240 languages and ChatGPT Translate only about 50, the latter excels in creative tasks, preserving tone, style, and cultural nuance.
