The Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) has launched an official investigation into the popular online platform Roblox amid concerns over potential risks to children and teenagers, the regulator announced.

As part of the review, ACM will assess whether Roblox takes sufficient and effective measures to protect underage users from harmful content and other online threats.

Roblox’s popularity and previous controversies
Roblox is one of the world’s most popular gaming platforms, attracting tens of millions of daily users, with particularly strong appeal among children. The platform has repeatedly been at the center of controversies related to its potential negative impact on minors. Reported issues include access to violent or explicit content, attempts by adult predators to contact children, and manipulative mechanics encouraging users to make in-game purchases.

ACM sees grounds for a full investigation
According to ACM, the regulator had already received multiple warnings about these problems and, in recent months, requested additional information from Roblox during a preliminary review. Based on the collected data, ACM concluded that there are “sufficient grounds” to initiate a full investigation into possible violations of applicable law by the company.

The investigation will focus on how Roblox complies with the Digital Services Act (DSA), which requires online platforms to implement proportionate and effective measures to ensure a high level of safety, privacy, and protection for underage users.
