OpenAI has updated ChatGPT’s voice mode, allowing users to speak with the chatbot while simultaneously seeing its responses on the screen, the company announced on X.
The new version integrates voice mode directly into the main chat interface. Users no longer need to switch to a separate full-screen mode to talk to the bot, making the experience much smoother.
Previously, enabling voice mode opened a dedicated screen with an animated blue circle and standalone control buttons. ChatGPT’s replies were voice-only, meaning they couldn’t be read on the display. If a user missed a response, they had to switch back to text mode to review it.
Now, during a voice conversation, ChatGPT displays text responses, images, maps and other elements in real time. Users can also easily scroll back through earlier messages.
Switching between voice and text within a single conversation has also become simpler. A quick tap on “End” returns the interface to standard text input. The update is rolling out to all users on mobile apps and the web, and only requires updating the app.
For those who prefer the previous layout, OpenAI has kept an option to restore it. In the settings menu, under “Voice Mode,” users can enable the “Separate mode” option to return to the original interface.
