Ukraine’s G7 allies intend to meet U.S. President Donald Trump during the World Economic Forum in Davos next week to secure his personal support for security guarantees for Ukraine after a ceasefire, Financial Times reports, citing officials.
Leaders of Italy, Germany, France, Canada and the United Kingdom, along with the President of the European Commission, are expected to attend the proposed meeting between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Officials are currently working out the details of the gathering, which may also include other leaders from the “coalition of the willing.” National security advisers from participating countries are planning a separate meeting as well.
European leaders want Trump’s endorsement of the security guarantees agreed in Paris last week, which would include the presence of French and British troops in Ukraine after hostilities stop. These guarantees are viewed as crucial to preventing Russia from resuming aggression once fighting ends. However, European partners remain uncertain about the extent of Trump’s long-term commitment to supporting Kyiv following any peace deal.
“Nothing will happen without the United States. It is still unclear what Trump truly thinks,” one European official said.
Earlier reports suggested that the U.K. and France could send around 15,000 troops as part of a multinational peacekeeping mission — significantly fewer than initially discussed. Trump previously told The New York Times he is prepared to commit the U.S. to Ukraine’s future defense, but only because he is confident Russia will not attempt another attack.
