IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva arrived in Kyiv on the morning of January 15 for an unannounced visit to hold talks with Ukrainian leadership, Reuters reports, citing two sources familiar with the matter.
According to one source, during her stay in Ukraine, Georgieva is expected to meet with President Volodymyr Zelensky, Prime Minister Olha Sviridenko, National Bank Governor Andriy Pyshny, and representatives of the Ukrainian business community.
The IMF chief will review Ukraine’s progress on a number of measures, including the adoption of the 2026 budget, steps to increase domestic revenue through expanding the tax base, and securing large-scale external financing from donors on grant-like terms.
Details of the visit have not been disclosed for security reasons. Georgieva last visited Ukraine in February 2023.
Reuters also noted Georgieva’s family ties to Ukraine: her brother is married to a Ukrainian and was in Kharkiv at the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion.
