U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that after the fall of Nicolás Maduro’s regime in Venezuela, Washington plans to intensify actions against drug cartels in Mexico. In an interview with Fox News, he stressed that drug trafficking destroys families and costs hundreds of thousands of lives every year.

According to Trump, the United States has “almost completely” blocked the maritime routes for drug smuggling and now intends to act on land. He claimed that cartels effectively control Mexico and are responsible for massive mortality. Trump also insisted that the U.S. is “doing a very good job” in its fight against the drug trade.

He additionally mentioned the situation in Venezuela, calling it an important test for American policy in the region.
