Ukraine’s energy system lost at least one gigawatt of generation after Russia’s latest massive attack on November 8, according to a government source cited by Ekonomichna Pravda.
Sources in the energy sector told the outlet that nationwide power outages are expected to last for an extended period, as it will take time to restore the Trypillia and Zmiiv thermal power plants and repair damaged substations linking nuclear facilities to the national grid.
Experts estimate that recovery will take several weeks, during which Ukraine may face three or four rounds of scheduled outages. The most optimistic scenario would see stabilization at two rounds, but much depends on the intensity of future Russian strikes.
A state company official noted that the situation will worsen as temperatures drop: “If we get through the winter with only two outage phases, that will be a huge success.”
The attack also reportedly hit facilities in the gas and oil sectors, while substations at the Rivne and Khmelnytskyi nuclear power plants suffered damage, forcing them to reduce power output.
