On Saturday, November 22, Ukraine successfully brought back 31 citizens who had been detained in Belarus and sentenced to terms ranging from 2 to 11 years, according to the Coordination Headquarters for Prisoner of War Affairs.
The youngest returnee is 18 years old, and the oldest is 58. Among those freed are seriously ill individuals, including cancer patients. The released civilians will receive the necessary assistance. The Coordination Headquarters thanked the U.S. president for his “fruitful work in returning both civilian and military Ukrainians from Belarus and Russia.”
Last week, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council Rustem Umerov reported the resumption of the process of releasing Ukrainians from Russian captivity, with an expected total of around 1,200 citizens.
Belarusian media outlet Belta also reported that self-proclaimed Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko pardoned the 31 Ukrainians.
“In line with agreements between the presidents of Belarus and the United States, Lukashenko, at the request of the Ukrainian side, pardoned 31 Ukrainian citizens,” the statement said.
