Russian dictator Vladimir Putin has effectively admitted that the Azerbaijani Airlines plane crash in Kazakhstan was caused by the aggressor country. He made the statement during a meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in Tajikistan, according to TASS on Telegram.

Putin claimed the tragedy might have been caused by debris from two missiles launched by Russian air defense systems.

“Two missiles fired by Russia’s air defense did not hit the AZAL plane directly but exploded a few meters away,” Putin said.

At the same time, he shifted responsibility onto Ukraine, asserting that Russian air defenses were attempting to intercept Ukrainian drones.

“On the day of the AZAL plane tragedy, Russia was targeting three Ukrainian drones that crossed the border,” Putin said.

Putin noted that Russia is providing full support for the investigation into the Azerbaijani plane crash and expressed condolences to the families of the victims.
