Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa made his first official visit to Moscow, holding talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Key topics included international issues, the presence of Russian military forces in Syria, and the potential extradition of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Russian and international media reported that al-Sharaa intends to request Assad’s extradition to Syria for trial over crimes against the Syrian people.
Discussions also covered the continued presence of Russia’s naval base in Tartus and the airbase in Khmeimim.
The meeting involved senior Russian officials, including Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak, Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration Maxim Oreshkin, Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov, Defense Minister Andrey Belousov, and Deputy Chief of the General Staff Igor Kostyukov.
Putin emphasized that relations between Russia and Syria have “always been exclusively friendly.”
