Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Swedish Gripen E fighter jets can significantly strengthen Ukraine’s combat aviation. The country is expecting 150 such aircraft, with the first deliveries scheduled for next year.

"Together with Sweden, Ukraine will significantly boost its combat aviation. This is an ambitious goal that must be achieved. Right now, a historic step has been taken – an agreement with Sweden on Gripen fighter jets, which is a good choice. We are counting on 150 of these aircraft for Ukraine, and the first are expected next year," Zelensky said during a video address on Telegram on Saturday.

Zelensky called the agreement with Saab regarding the supply of Gripen jets historic.

"The Gripens for Ukraine are part of our security guarantees. These Air Forces will be able to fully protect our skies. Such a large-scale agreement for Ukraine’s combat aviation has never happened before. This is a historic achievement. We are working to fully implement it," the statement added.

As reported, during his visit to Sweden on October 22, Zelensky and Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson began working on acquiring Gripen jets for Ukraine.

"Today, there is a first document between our countries that opens the way for Ukraine to receive a serious fleet of Swedish-made Gripen fighter jets," Zelensky emphasized.

Kristersson stated that the first deliveries of the new Gripen fighters to Ukraine could happen within three years. He also highlighted the importance of exploring all options for Ukraine’s long-term financing, including the potential use of frozen Russian assets.
