Ukraine is considering a visit to Washington by President Volodymyr Zelensky this week, but several members of his inner circle question whether the trip is advisable, according to Financial Times journalist Christopher Miller.

Miller wrote on X that opinions among Ukrainian officials are divided. Some believe Zelensky should meet U.S. President Donald Trump in person to discuss Trump’s proposed “peace plan”. Others warn the meeting could carry significant diplomatic risks if it takes an unexpected turn.

He said the Ukrainian delegation felt “real progress” had been made in negotiations in Geneva despite difficult talks.

According to Miller, discussions about a potential White House visit have been under way since Trump increased pressure to speed up negotiations aimed at ending the war.

“There are two camps: one thinks Zelensky should go to Washington to discuss the issue directly with Trump; the other fears something could go wrong and cause a major setback,” Miller wrote.

He added that the decision on whether Zelensky will travel will depend on the outcome of the Geneva talks and whether Ukrainians believe “there is something they can sign onto without selling out the country.”
