Major General Yevhen Khmara has officially been appointed acting defense minister of Ukraine following a decision by the Cabinet of Ministers.

According to government resolutions No. 722-r and No. 723-r, Khmara assumed the role on July 20.

Before taking over as acting minister, the government appointed him as a deputy defense minister. The relevant resolutions were adopted on July 17 and published on the government's official portal on July 20.

Khmara will lead the Defense Ministry until parliament appoints a permanent defense minister.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on July 16 that he had instructed Khmara, who had been serving as acting head of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), to take over the Defense Ministry on an interim basis.

The president said he would formally submit Khmara's candidacy to parliament after all required legal procedures are completed.
