US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said no agreements on ending Russia's war against Ukraine were reached during the US-Russia summit in Alaska, rejecting claims that Moscow is dissatisfied with how Washington is implementing alleged commitments.
According to Rubio, the talks produced proposals, not agreements.
"This war is exhausting Europe, especially Ukraine. It is also increasingly exhausting Russia," Rubio said. "If we are prepared to move forward and play a constructive role... to bring the parties together and help end this war, that is what the president has been trying to do for the past year and a half. But there was no agreement in Alaska."
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov responded by urging the United States to clarify what had taken place during the meeting in Anchorage.
Lavrov said Rubio's remarks raise questions, arguing that US envoys had visited Moscow before the summit to present proposals from President Donald Trump to Russian leader Vladimir Putin, which the Kremlin later accepted.
"The fact remains that proposals from the United States, accepted by the Russian side, were discussed in Alaska," Lavrov said.
Earlier this week, Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said Russia expects to achieve its own objectives rather than implement understandings reached during the Anchorage talks. However, at the end of May, Ushakov had stated that Washington and Moscow had reached a degree of mutual understanding during the summit.
Lavrov also recently said he "doesn't even want to think" that the meeting between the two presidents was intended to buy time for Ukraine to strengthen its armed forces. He added that the United States is moving away from the role of an impartial mediator, pointing to Washington's continued expansion of sanctions against Russia.
