Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has reaffirmed that Poland will continue supporting Ukraine, while calling on Kyiv to demonstrate goodwill in order to reduce tensions in bilateral relations, Polskie Radio 24 reports.
Tusk stressed that Warsaw’s position on supporting Ukraine remains unchanged ahead of upcoming international discussions. At the same time, he urged Polish officials to be cautious when discussing additional financial assistance.
“Ukraine is at war, but Poland bears the main burden of protecting our border while also defending the European Union’s eastern frontier. That is why Poland deserves special consideration,” he said.
The Polish prime minister added that he sees signs that Ukrainian politicians understand the negative consequences of escalating disputes between the two countries.
“We should seek an honest conversation about the past and avoid further escalating tensions,” Tusk said, emphasizing that strong Polish-Ukrainian relations are in the mutual interest of both nations but require goodwill from both sides.
According to Tusk, Warsaw can no longer be the only side consistently demonstrating goodwill. However, he stressed that a firmer stance should not be accompanied by hostility or contempt, warning that such an approach would only deepen divisions.
The remarks come after the office of Polish President Karol Nawrocki criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s proposal to establish a National Pantheon, describing it as a move that could increase tensions.
Earlier, Polish Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz also stated that Poland would not support Ukraine’s accession to the European Union if Kyiv continues honoring certain historical figures that remain controversial in Poland.
