British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper has privately urged Prime Minister Keir Starmer to step down, according to Sky News.
Cooper, one of the most influential members of the government, reportedly delivered the message to Starmer last weekend. The prime minister is currently staying with his family at Chequers.
The political crisis has intensified following Labour’s poor performance in local elections. Reports suggest that several senior ministers have questioned Starmer’s leadership, while former Health Secretary Wes Streeting has already resigned, citing a loss of confidence in the prime minister.
Media reports indicate that Starmer could announce a timetable for his departure in the coming days after consultations with cabinet members, party donors and trade unions. However, there has been no official confirmation from Downing Street that he intends to resign.
