British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced that he will step down as leader of the Labour Party and leave his position as prime minister, according to a statement delivered outside Downing Street.
“I will resign as leader of the Labour Party,” Starmer said.
He added that he had informed King Charles III of his decision and pledged to ensure an orderly transition of power while offering his full support to his successor.
According to reports, Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, is considered a leading contender to replace Starmer after a strong electoral performance that boosted his standing within the Labour Party.
Calls for Starmer's resignation had intensified in recent months following Labour's poor results in local elections and a series of political controversies. His position was further weakened by criticism over the appointment of Peter Mandelson as the UK's ambassador to the United States, amid renewed scrutiny of Mandelson's past association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
