Researchers from NASA and Toho University estimate that in roughly one billion years, Earth’s atmosphere will lose its oxygen, making life as we know it impossible.
Scientists explain that as the Sun gradually heats up, carbon dioxide molecules will begin to break down. Without CO₂, plants will be unable to perform photosynthesis, halting oxygen production. This will lead to the disappearance of forests, animals, and humans.
Only anaerobic microorganisms that can survive without oxygen will persist. Methane levels will rise, the air will become toxic, and the planet will slowly transform into a barren rock, similar to its state billions of years ago.
The ozone layer will also vanish, leaving Earth unprotected from harmful solar radiation.
