The European Union is currently discussing possible changes to its temporary protection framework for Ukrainian refugees, but no decisions have been made.

This was stated by Cyprus Deputy Minister of Interior for Migration Nicholas Ioannides ahead of a meeting of the EU Council on Home Affairs.

According to him, member states are considering various approaches to the future status of Ukrainian refugees, including potential criteria and policy options after the current temporary protection scheme expires.

“We have not taken any decisions yet, and that is why we are here today—to discuss different views,” Ioannides said, adding that EU countries are still exchanging ideas and recommendations.

He noted that these discussions are part of broader preparations for guidance from the European Commission, but stressed that no binding decisions have been adopted.

What this means for Ukrainians

The EU is expected to extend temporary protection for Ukrainians at least until March 2027. At the same time, longer-term options are being explored for the post-war period, which could affect future applicants, including men of conscription age.

However, the European Commission has emphasized that any potential new rules would not affect Ukrainians who have already been granted temporary protection status.
