A landmark appointment has been made in the Bundesliga.
Marie-Louise Eta has been named interim head coach of Union Berlin, making history in European football.
The club dismissed Steffen Baumgart after a poor run of form, with just two wins in the last 14 matches despite ambitions of qualifying for European competitions. Union currently sit 11th in the table with 32 points.
Eta, 34, had been working with the club’s U-19 side since 2023 before moving up as an assistant coach for the first team.
She becomes the first woman to take charge of a club in one of Europe’s “big five” leagues — England, Spain, Italy, Germany, and France — marking a historic milestone for the sport.
