ayPal has integrated its digital wallet into ChatGPT, becoming the first payment service to allow users to make purchases directly within OpenAI’s chatbot. The rollout is planned for next year. Once launched, hundreds of millions of users will see a “Buy with PayPal” button in ChatGPT whenever the assistant recommends products. Sellers will be able to offer their goods without separate integration with OpenAI — having a PayPal account will be enough.
“We have hundreds of millions of PayPal wallet holders who will now be able to click the ‘Buy with PayPal’ button in ChatGPT and complete secure and trusted payments,” said CEO Alex Chriss.
According to Chriss, the partnership marks a shift toward a new shopping model he calls “agentic commerce.” “It’s a completely new shopping paradigm. It’s hard to imagine a future where agentic commerce isn’t a major part of it,” he explained.
The integration removes one of the biggest barriers to AI-driven e-commerce: users will now be able to not only discover products through ChatGPT but also complete purchases without leaving the platform.
For consumers, it means the same familiar checkout process with PayPal’s standard fraud protection and verification. For merchants, it provides a way to sell directly through ChatGPT using PayPal’s existing infrastructure.
“This isn’t just about transactions,” Chriss added. “It’s about a network of verified merchants — the largest in the world — and the most trusted consumer wallet base.”
The partnership also includes a broader collaboration: PayPal plans to adopt OpenAI’s enterprise products to accelerate its own innovation. For the company, this is a key step toward solidifying its role as a leading payment tool in AI-driven commerce.
