"A fatal combination": Tusk on Ukraine’s political crisis and chaos in the negotiations

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk commented on Ukraine’s political crisis amid disorder in the peace-talks process. He described the situation as “a fatal combination.”

On his X account, Tusk wrote:

“Orban visits Putin, Nawrocki visits Orban. Chaos in the talks led by Vitkoff and a political crisis in Kyiv — a fatal combination.”

Here: by “Orban” he meant Viktor Orban (Prime Minister of Hungary), by “Putin” — Vladimir Putin (Russian president), by “Nawrocki” he referred to Karol Nawrocki (president of Poland’s National Remembrance Institute), and by “Vitkoff” — Steve Vitkoff, special envoy of the U.S. president.

What’s going on in Ukraine

A political crisis in Ukraine erupted after a corruption scandal: the anti-corruption division of NABU exposed a scheme in which kickbacks were allegedly demanded from contractors of Energoatom.

As a result:

The parliament dismissed the justice minister and the energy minister, who were implicated in the scandal.

A former deputy prime minister also became a suspect; according to investigators, he visited the office used by the criminal group to launder money.

In the recordings published by NABU, the name of the head of the presidential office, Andriy Yermak, reportedly appeared. On the morning of November 28, law-enforcement officers searched Yermak’s home.

After that, Yermak resigned — a move that was formalized today by a decree signed by President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The shake-up in Ukraine’s leadership comes at a critical moment, as the American “peace plan” is being actively negotiated. This weekend, U.S. Army Secretary Daniel Driscoll is expected to visit Kyiv.
