President of Finland Alexander Stubb has not ruled out the possibility of becoming the European Union’s representative in potential peace negotiations with Russia.
According to Yle, Stubb said in an interview that meaningful peace talks could only begin after Russia commits to a ceasefire. When asked whether he would be willing to act as Europe’s representative in negotiations, he replied: “If you ask me, it’s probably impossible to answer negatively to that question.”
Meanwhile, Helsingin Sanomat, citing diplomatic sources, reported that Stubb is being prepared for a potentially significant diplomatic role as Europe gradually begins considering future negotiations with Moscow.
According to the report, discussions within Europe are still at an early stage, but the Finnish president could eventually take on a central role in the process.
During a NATO foreign ministers’ meeting in Sweden, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio reportedly said that previous talks had not produced results, though United States remains open to further meetings if they prove productive. He also rejected claims that Washington is pressuring Kyiv.
Earlier, on May 20, Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed hope for returning to trilateral negotiations involving Europe and proposed reviving the E3 format for future peace talks.
