German Chancellor Friedrich Merz warned that Russia is preparing to expand its military aggression beyond Ukraine, posing a growing threat to several European countries.
Speaking at a press conference in Berlin, Merz said the Kremlin's ambitions extend far beyond the current war.
"We see clear signs that Russia is preparing for further aggression. It goes far beyond Ukraine: it threatens the Baltic states, Moldova, and other parts of Europe," he said.
Germany already facing hybrid attacks
Merz said Germany is already experiencing elements of Russia's hybrid warfare, including:
- acts of sabotage on German territory;
- espionage attempts;
- cyberattacks targeting critical infrastructure.
"We are not living in a state of war, but we are no longer living in peace either," the chancellor said.
He added that Germany is rapidly rebuilding its defense capabilities in response to the growing security threat.
Despite concerns that Russia could exploit the period while Europe is rearming, Merz said NATO's deterrence remains credible and alliance members are united on the need to strengthen collective defense.
His remarks come after Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda said intelligence indicates Russia is preparing new aggressive actions, while Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski warned that Moscow could stage provocations involving Ukrainian drones.
