Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said tensions between Poland and Ukraine over historical disputes related to the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) have escalated too far, but stressed that the leaders of both countries recognize the need to address the issue.

Speaking after a meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Polish President Karol Nawrocki on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara, Tusk welcomed the resumption of direct dialogue between the two leaders.

According to the Polish prime minister, their public statements indicate a willingness to resolve disagreements that only benefit the Kremlin.

"The Russians would be happiest if a serious crisis erupted in Polish-Ukrainian relations," Tusk said.

He also warned about provocative content circulating on social media that targets Polish companies supporting Ukraine, arguing that Russian bots are often behind efforts to inflame tensions. Tusk said the Polish government would take a firm stance against disinformation and that authorities would respond to acts of harassment based on nationality.

Ahead of the anniversary of the Volyn tragedy, Tusk called for calm and constructive dialogue.

"I would like to appeal to all decent, wise, and responsible Ukrainians. Remember that this great European community is built on truth, and truth is the essential foundation of reconciliation. I hope for reflection on the Ukrainian side, but I also appeal to everyone in Poland to avoid excessive emotions," he said.

The meeting between Zelenskyy and Nawrocki was their first face-to-face talks after a prolonged period of strained relations. While both sides described the discussions as constructive, Polish officials later acknowledged that longstanding historical disagreements remain unresolved despite the renewed diplomatic engagement.
