Romanian authorities have decided to shut down Russia’s consulate in Constanța and declare the Russian consul persona non grata following a nighttime incident in the city of Galați, where a Russian drone crashed into a residential high-rise building and injured civilians. The announcement was made by Romanian President Nicușor Dan after an emergency meeting of the Supreme Council of National Defense, according to Digi24.
The president stressed that Russia bears full responsibility for the incident. In addition to closing the consulate in Constanța, interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan proposed introducing additional sanctions against Russian diplomats stationed in Bucharest. Romanian authorities have also increased personnel numbers and strengthened civil defense measures across potentially affected areas in the country’s southeast.
The incident has been described as the most serious security breach on Romanian territory since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. President Dan discussed the attack with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, who reaffirmed the Alliance’s full solidarity with Romania and its readiness to defend every part of NATO territory.
