Ukraine’s Center for Countering Disinformation (CCD) has warned that Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) is preparing a new information operation aimed at worsening relations between Ukraine and Poland.
According to the CCD, the campaign is expected to involve the publication of forged documents related to the Volhynia tragedy and other events of the Second World War.
CCD head Andrii Kovalenko said that FSB Director Alexander Bortnikov is overseeing Russian information operations designed to drive a wedge between Kyiv and Warsaw.
“FSB officers are planning to publish falsified documents concerning Second World War events. Russian state media have already been tasked with amplifying this narrative,” Kovalenko said.
The CCD stressed that Moscow is exploiting sensitive historical issues in an attempt to undermine the strategic partnership between Ukraine and Poland by manipulating interpretations of the past.
Poland has also warned about the threat. Polish Minister-Coordinator of Special Services Tomasz Siemoniak recently said Russian bot networks have increased their activity amid tensions between Kyiv and Warsaw, adding that Moscow continues to seek opportunities to deepen divisions between the two allies.
Former Ukrainian Ambassador Kostiantyn Yelisieiev has likewise argued that Russia views any deterioration in Ukrainian-Polish relations as a strategic advantage, warning that the Kremlin has long sought to exploit historical disputes to weaken cooperation between the two countries.
