Denys Prokopenko believes his war will end only when the last soldier of Azov is freed from captivity and Ukraine regains its 1991 borders.
President Volodymyr Zelensky has awarded the rank of brigadier general to Denys Prokopenkost Corps of the NGU Azov, is the youngest general in independent Ukraine at 35 years old. He led the combined Ukrainian garrison defending Mariupol, comprising around 10,000 personnel from the Armed Forces, Territorial Defense, National Guard, National Police, and other units, resisting forces five times larger during nearly 90 days of the Mariupol siege. He was captured and later returned to service with the help of international partners.
In April last year, the National Guard of Ukraine formed two corps, headed by Colonel Denys Prokopenko of the 12th Special Purpose Brigade "Azov" and Colonel Ihor Obolensky of the 13th Operational Purpose Brigade "Khartiya."
Prokopenko has emphasized that, despite modern technology, infantry remains key in warfare. He highlighted that the best weapon is a motivated, well-trained, disciplined soldier, supported by modern technology. "I believe the future lies in an integrated system that develops not only weaponry and technology but also our most valuable resource — the infantry," he added.
