Nine people were killed after a direct strike by an Iranian ballistic missile on a residential neighborhood in Beit Shemesh, near Jerusalem, Israel, The Times of Israel reports.

Impact and casualties

The missile hit a residential area on Sunday, March 1, destroying a synagogue and causing severe damage to a public bomb shelter and surrounding buildings. The Magen David Adom emergency service confirmed eight deaths on site, with one more person dying later in hospital. A total of 28 people were hospitalized, including a four-year-old child, and two remain in critical condition.

Investigation into the strike

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are investigating why the missile was not intercepted. The Home Front Command is reviewing the circumstances of the strike on the shelter. According to local police, most of the casualties were inside the public bomb shelter, suggesting a direct hit on the structure.

Assessment of Iran’s threat

This strike marks the deadliest attack in Israel during the current escalation. The IDF estimates that Iran currently possesses around 2,500 ballistic missiles. Military officials emphasized that Israel will not allow Tehran to restore its full missile capability.

“Possession of missiles by a regime intent on destroying the State of Israel constitutes an existential threat,” the IDF said.

Iran prepares for war

Tensions remain extremely high in the Middle East. Following the latest escalation, Iran has reportedly adjusted its defense strategy and prepared for a prolonged conflict. Tehran has also signaled increased pressure on Israel’s allies and the United States.

The situation has raised security concerns in Europe, with German authorities reportedly preparing for possible attacks by Iranian “sleeper cells” capable of carrying out sabotage operations.
