There are several foods that can help reduce blood pressure — and, according to Parade, one of them is likely already in your pantry: unsalted nuts.
“A small handful of nuts such as walnuts, almonds and pistachios each day may help lower blood pressure,” said cardiologist Dr. Oeyn-Xiao. “These nuts contain L-arginine, an amino acid that helps produce nitric oxide, which has a vasodilating effect on the arteries and can potentially lower blood pressure.”
However, she cautioned that nuts are high in fat — especially pistachios — so portion control is key.
Nuts aren’t the only snack that may support healthy blood pressure.
“Fresh fruits and vegetables, especially berries, bananas and leafy greens, are excellent choices,” said Dr. Jane Morgan, also a cardiologist. “Low-fat yogurt or hummus with vegetables are also great options, since they’re rich in fiber, potassium and antioxidants that help maintain healthy blood pressure.”
Experts add that broader lifestyle changes — from diet to physical activity — can further aid in reducing blood pressure.
