Some foods are so rich in vitamins and minerals that they’re often called superfoods. One such fruit has been shown to help combat numerous age-related diseases, including high blood pressure and heart problems.

According to a study published in Nutrients, the key to longevity may lie in strawberries. Researchers found that the berry helps lower cholesterol and blood pressure — and may even protect against cancer.

Adding strawberries to the diet was shown to improve cardiometabolic risk factors in adults who are overweight or have elevated levels of low-density lipoproteins (LDL), commonly known as “bad” cholesterol.

The berry also has strong anti-inflammatory properties. Scientists believe this effect is due to a combination of polyphenols, including ellagic acid and ellagitannins, which have been found in animal studies to inhibit the growth of cancer cells. Eating strawberries may also slow glucose absorption and reduce insulin demand.
