US President Donald Trump has approved a one-year extension of sanctions against Russia in response to its invasion of Ukraine.
The executive order continues the state of emergency first declared under Executive Order 13660 in 2014, following Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea and its use of force against Ukraine. The sanctions target Russian officials, oligarchs, and key sectors, restricting access to Western technology, capital, and strategic goods, and remain legally active through annual renewal.
Additional executive orders, including 14065 and 14068 issued in 2022, reinforce the measures, imposing personal sanctions, sectoral restrictions, and limitations on imports, exports, and dealings with Russia’s sovereign debt.
The Kremlin has expressed hopes that Washington might lift the sanctions, arguing that continued restrictions have cost American businesses over $300 billion and claiming that removing them could open up joint projects valued at $14 trillion.
