European political circles are discussing possible parameters of a future peace agreement concerning Ukraine. Among the options being considered are accelerating the country’s accession to the European Union and providing additional security guarantees.
This was reported by Die Welt.
Possible format of negotiations
According to diplomatic sources, one scenario under discussion suggests that Ukraine could make territorial concessions as part of a potential peace settlement. In return, the country could receive a clear prospect of accelerated membership in the European Union within the coming years.
European officials say the United States, acting as a mediator in the negotiations, is promoting a model in which Kyiv would obtain security guarantees and political backing, while Russia could retain control over a significant part of the Donbas.
What is being discussed in Brussels
Diplomats in Brussels note that the Ukrainian leadership would need a strong argument to persuade society to accept possible compromises. One such factor could be a fast-tracked path to EU membership.
In discussions, the year 2027 has been mentioned as a possible target date for membership. However, many sources consider this timeline unlikely and describe a period between 2028 and 2030 as more realistic.
Challenges of accelerated accession
At the same time, European institutions acknowledge that speeding up the process will not be easy. Current EU enlargement procedures require meeting numerous conditions, including reforms, anti-corruption efforts, and strengthening the rule of law.
Diplomatic sources stress that any political decision must take into account existing accession rules as well as the willingness of EU member states to support such a move. Therefore, the final parameters of any potential agreement remain under negotiation.
Earlier, Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Ukraine is facing pressure from both the United States and Russia to transfer control of Donbas to Moscow as part of possible peace arrangements.
He also stated that Ukrainian forces had managed to regain control of around 300 square kilometers of territory in the southern direction after pushing back Russian units. According to him, the advance occurred specifically in that sector of the front.
