Donald Trump said he believes he would be entitled to seek another presidential term, claiming that he was “cheated” in the 2020 election, CNN reports.
Statement about a new term
Before departing for Texas, Trump said:
“Should we stay for another term? Well, we have the right to, because they cheated us in the second round — if you think about it, we really do have that right.”
CNN noted that no evidence of widespread fraud in the 2020 election — which was won by Joe Biden — has been presented.
Speech in Texas
The remarks came during a speech at the port of Corpus Christi. Trump appeared wearing a hat reading “American Gulf” and walked onstage to the song God Bless the USA by Lee Greenwood.
In his address, he reviewed the state of the country and recounted a story about an acquaintance who said his family life improved thanks to growth in his 401(k) retirement account amid the administration’s policies.
Earlier comments on a third term
In October last year, Trump dismissed intentions to run for a third term. In November, when asked about a possible 2028 campaign, he said the Republican Party has a “strong bench” unlike the Democrats.
Meanwhile, the United States continues pressure on Russia and military support for Ukraine, while officials stress the conflict cannot be resolved solely by force. Washington has also not made a final decision on a possible strike against Iran amid dissatisfaction with the pace of nuclear talks.
