The European Union is not yet able to set a specific date for Ukraine’s accession, but it will continue supporting the country on its path toward membership.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said this while speaking to journalists in Kyiv. She stressed that it is “absolutely clear” Ukraine can become an EU member.
“As you all know, this is a merit-based process, which means the pace depends on the candidate country,” she noted, praising Ukraine for performing “remarkably well” in implementing complex reforms despite fighting a war for survival.
Von der Leyen acknowledged that a fixed timeline is important for Ukrainians, but said such a date cannot currently be determined. “From our side, a date is not possible yet, but of course the support that will help you reach your goal will definitely be provided,” she assured.
EU membership hopes by 2027
Earlier, Deputy Head of Ukraine’s Presidential Office Ihor Zhovkva said Kyiv expects a political decision on EU membership by 2027.
EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos has commented that the bloc’s enlargement methodology was designed for peacetime conditions. She added that accelerating Ukraine’s accession would require changes to rules that have been in place for 40 years and would need the backing of all 27 EU member states.
