A meeting between President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian leader Vladimir Putin could take place in the near future, with possible participation of U.S. President Donald Trump.
This was stated by U.S. presidential envoy Steve Witkoff in an interview with Fox News.
According to him, the war is “senseless,” with both sides arguing over territories and unable to reach consensus on that issue.
“Jared and I hope that the proposals we have put on the table will bring the sides together within the next three weeks and possibly lead to a summit between Zelenskyy and Putin. It could even be a trilateral meeting with the president (Trump). We’ll see,” the envoy said.
Witkoff added that Trump does not want to hold a meeting if he believes it will produce no results.
“He has a unique ability to make this happen. Hopefully, in the coming weeks you will hear good news,” he noted.
The envoy also said he had faced criticism for frequently meeting Putin, explaining that reaching an agreement requires understanding the other side’s position. According to him, he has already met the Russian president eight times.
Peace talks
Recently, peace talks between Russia, the United States, and Ukraine were held in Geneva. Some progress was reportedly made on military issues, including monitoring a ceasefire, but the political part of the negotiations remains difficult.
The parties plan to meet again in Geneva soon.
One of the most difficult issues remains territory and the fate of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. Moscow insists that Ukraine hand over the Donbas region, including areas not currently occupied, while Kyiv strongly rejects the demand.
