Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is holding his first official bilateral meeting with Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar in Brussels on October 16, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty reported.
According to a source in the Ukrainian delegation cited by the broadcaster, the talks are taking place one-on-one, without the participation of the two countries’ delegations.
Ukraine’s accession to the European Union is among the key topics of the meeting.
The discussions come after the EU opened two additional accession negotiation clusters for Ukraine on October 13, following Hungary’s decision to drop its objections. The move followed Ukraine’s adoption of legislative changes concerning the educational and language rights of the Hungarian minority in Zakarpattia region.
Zelenskyy has said Ukraine will work to open the two remaining negotiation clusters by the end of 2026.
The meeting marks a step toward improving relations between Kyiv and Budapest after years of disputes that complicated Ukraine’s path toward EU membership.
